Script Management

Script Management — Custom JavaScript Tools Inside Your Solutions

Build calculators, custom reports, and external data pulls with the Scripting Widget—JavaScript running against your live Records, created and controlled by the Solution Managers you designate.

What Is Script Management?

Script Management is SmartSuite's capability for building and controlling custom JavaScript tools through the Scripting Widget. Solution Managers and Administrators write scripts against a documented Scripting API—reading and updating Tables, Records, and Fields—to create interactive calculators, consolidated reports, and external data pulls directly inside a Solution. It gives technical teams an extension point beyond no-code configuration, without leaving the governed platform; the full method reference lives in the Scripting documentation.

Scripting Widget

Write and Test JavaScript in a Live, Two-Panel Editor

The Scripting Widget pairs a code editor and API reference on one side with a live preview on the other, so you build and test in the same place your users will run the tool. Run a script to surface errors, resize the panels as you work, and rename widgets inline as tools evolve.

Scripts live inside the Solution they serve—no separate hosting, deployment pipeline, or external tooling to maintain.

Scripting API

Read and Update Records Through the Documented Scripting API

Scripts work with the same objects your teams do. The Scripting API reference covers Table, Record, and Field objects with methods for retrieving records, updating field values, and listing comments, plus member helpers that identify the current user.

That's enough surface to build departmental calculators, generate consolidated reports from multiple record fields, prompt users for input that creates new Records, or pull in external data like API feeds and live prices.

Controlled Authorship

Restrict Script Creation to Solution Managers and Administrators

Custom code is powerful, so authorship is gated: only Solution Managers and Administrators can create, edit, delete, or manage Scripting Widgets within the Solutions they manage. Everyone else interacts with the finished tool, not the code behind it.

Scripts stay scoped to their Solution, keeping custom logic close to the data it serves and to the people accountable for it.

How GRC Teams Use

Script Management

Some governance logic doesn't fit a formula or an automation. Script Management gives GRC teams a controlled way to build exactly the tool a risk methodology or audit process needs, right where the work happens.

Custom Risk Scoring Calculator

Build a scoring tool that reads likelihood and impact fields, applies your organization's weighting model, and writes the computed score back to the risk Record—consistent methodology, no side spreadsheets.

Consolidated Assessment Reports

Generate a report-style output that pulls narrative, status, and evidence fields from multiple Records into one consolidated view for review meetings and audit prep.

Vendor Signals Beside the Register

Pull security-ratings or vendor status API data into a widget beside your third-party risk register, so assessors see external signals next to the Records they're reviewing—without switching tools mid-assessment.

Guided Exception Request Intake

Prompt requesters through custom input logic that validates policy-exception submissions against business rules before creating a Record. Reviewers receive complete, well-formed requests instead of chasing missing details.

Scripts Beside the REST API

Use Script Management for interactive, in-Solution governance tools and the REST API for scheduled, high-volume compliance jobs—two extension points on one governed data model.

Features FAQ’s
Frequently Asked Questions About
Script Management
What is Script Management in SmartSuite?

Script Management is SmartSuite's capability for building custom JavaScript tools through the Scripting Widget—an in-Solution editor with a live preview and a documented Scripting API. Teams use it for calculators, consolidated reports, guided data entry, and pulling external data into a Solution.

What language do SmartSuite scripts use?

JavaScript. Scripts run in the Scripting Widget and call documented methods on Table, Record, and Field objects—such as retrieving records, updating field values, and listing comments—plus helpers like identifying the current member.

Who can create and edit scripts in SmartSuite?

Only Solution Managers and Administrators can create, edit, delete, or manage Scripting Widgets, and only within the Solutions they manage. Other members use the finished tools without access to the underlying code.

Can a script pull in external data?

Yes. Documented use cases include pulling in external data such as third-party APIs, stock prices, and weather, alongside internal patterns like calculators and consolidated record reports.

Which plans include the Scripting Widget?

The Scripting Widget is available on all plan types, per the SmartSuite Help Center. REST API access, a separate capability, carries its own plan-based allowances.

How does Script Management differ from Automations?

Automations handle no-code trigger-and-action workflows—when a record changes, do something. Script Management is for interactive, custom-logic tools that run when a person uses them: computing scores on demand, generating a report view, or prompting for validated input.

Build the Exact Tool Your Workflow Needs

Open a Scripting Widget, call the Scripting API against your live Records, and put custom logic where the work already happens.
